Service Description

After the visit to the hospital, some patients might require respiratory care services in the patient's personal residence. The Respiratory Therapist may receive an order from the physician to visit a patient in the patient's home to either conduct a full patient assessment and monitoring, to deliver diagnostic and therapeutic modalities and services, for disease management, patient care education, and to troubleshoot and maintain equipment. The goal of seamless medical extension in the patient's home is to achieve optimum level of respiratory patient care through goal setting, patient education, and health promotion. Over the past twenty years, It is the position of the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) that the Respiratory Therapist is the most qualified professional to perform respiratory therapy in the home care setting to patients. The AARC based their position on the solid education, training, and competency-testing the Respiratory Therapist accomplished. In fact, the AARC believes that the complexities of the provision of respiratory care in the home by an unqualified individual, licensed or unlicensed, places the public (patients) at significant risk to injury. At The Respiratory Center, the staff will cover oxygen therapy at home, aerosol therapy delivery, humidity delivery, bronchial hygiene therapy, lung expansion therapy, airway management, non-intensive mechanical ventilation, sleep therapy, apnea therapy, and additional respiratory care provisions in the home care setting. During this live session, all candidates will gain the knowledge needed to work autonomously in the home with patients. The clinician will develop the skills to communicate with the physician and perform as an extension to the physician. The Respiratory Therapist will also make recommendations to the physician that will benefit the patient. Some of the recommendations might include changing the current respiratory equipment in use or adding a respiratory medication for a specific patient action. At the end of this review session at The Respiratory Center, all candidates will have the knowledge needed to function completely in the home care setting. In addition, all candidates will be prepared to sit for the NBRC exams.
